Torchlight Frontiers, the ambitious successor to Torchlight 2, was originally scheduled for release in 2019. The release window has now been officially postponed.
What is Torchlight Frontiers? Torchlight Frontiers is a new hack and slash game in the Torchlight series. The third installment is being extensively tested because the hack and slash is supposed to incorporate many MMORPG aspects, including persistent worlds and housing.
Unlike its two predecessors, which were full-priced games, Torchlight Frontiers will be free-to-play and is expected to be supported with new updates over a longer period.
Much of this sounds similar to approaches in Diablo 4. The new game from Blizzard is also said to include MMO features.
No new release date for the future
When will Torchlight Frontiers be released? Last week we already talked about how Torchlight Frontiers is currently developing and that a release in 2019 is unlikely. This was originally indicated as the release window.
The title is currently in a closed alpha, but there is no NDA in place.
At ExileCon, PCGamer spoke with Max Schaefer, the founder of Echtra Games. He confirmed that a release in 2019 will not happen, but he could not provide a new timeframe:
We haven’t updated the date yet, which we probably should. But we don’t really have concrete things to say. We’re currently making some changes to the game, which is kind of hard to describe.
We don’t have any new information to share. That’s why we’ve been waiting. But it’s obvious that we won’t be able to manage a release [2019]. However, we are making progress with the game, and it’s getting better day by day. And we’re really excited about it.
How can you track the progress of the game? Those who want to closely follow the development of Torchlight Frontiers can track the roadmap on a Trello board. It lists what is currently being worked on and what has already been completed.
In addition to a playable version, there are already many contents that have been improved and released in recent months. A release in 2020, therefore before Diablo 4 and also before the new Path of Exile 2 seems very likely.
