The community of the MMORPG The Lord of the Rings Online (PC) is currently in an uproar, as a change has been introduced that is possibly the most controversial in 11 years.
What is this change? In the quite successful MMORPG, it is necessary to find so-called “Scrolls of Empowerment.” These allow players to level up the legendary items that are crucial for the endgame.
With this change, it has become extremely difficult to find these scrolls. This also makes it significantly harder to upgrade equipment, which negatively impacts the endgame.
Especially those who want to bring an item to level 100 are now facing a big challenge, as this now takes an extremely long time.
It becomes problematic when groups are being formed for endgame content. Players who have level 100 for legendary items are preferred. This could mean that some players will now be excluded from this content longer until they have grinded enough to bring the legendaries to 100 with the “Scrolls of Empowerment.”
A change in LOTRO that is not well received

- Nath, who is regarded as an expert on the MMORPG, writes on Twitter: “Looks like that’s it. Four people, two veterans and two newcomers from my 6-man leveling group left LOTRO tonight after seeing the scroll changes pushed through. This is not a good sign for the future of the game.” He adds on Twitter: “After 11 years of playing, I’ve seen many things, but nothing has been as controversial as this.”
- Arnenna writes in the official forum (via lotro.com): “At this point, I am done with the game… just done, and I really don’t care anymore.”
- Starliteyes sees it a bit differently (via lotro.com): “Grinding doesn’t bother me much to get the stuff I need. Then I play more, which means more fun for me.”
What do the developers say about it? The team is aware that the community does not like this change to the scrolls and seems not to be satisfied with it themselves. There is a statement in the official LOTRO forum:
We will take another look at the distribution of the “Scrolls of Empowerment” in the near future for a patch, but we didn’t want to hold up the other changes in this patch, especially some of the performance work, and it will be helpful to get some fresh feedback after people have been engaged with these changes for a while.
