There is a major change in the MMORPG Star Trek Online – the optional monthly subscription is being abolished. However, in its place, an Elite Starter Pack will be introduced, and the lifetime subscription will remain available.
Star Trek Online – from subscription MMO to Free2Play. Subscriptions are always a tricky subject in MMOs. Some players find them good because only the dedicated fans play, and they are willing to pay monthly to support “their” game. Others do not want to commit too strongly and are not willing to pay a monthly fee, as they cannot estimate how often they will play.
Therefore, many MMORPGs that started with subscriptions have since switched to a Free2Play model.
Star Trek Online was a classic subscription MMO from its launch in February 2010 until January 2012, similar to World of Warcraft. One needed a subscription to play it. However, since January 2012, Star Trek Online has adopted a Free2Play model – meaning you no longer necessarily need a subscription. Captains could, however, continue to pay monthly to enjoy certain benefits. Now this “freemium” subscription is also going away.

Elite Starter Pack replaces regular subscription
In Star Trek Online, after eight years, the regular subscription is now being abolished. Instead, you can purchase an Elite Starter Pack for 1,500 Zen in the store, which is a one-time purchase. For about 19.99€, you can get 2200 Zen in the shop. So, you would spend a one-time 20€ to get the Elite Starter Pack and have 700 Zen left over.
This pack offers:
- one new character slot
- 20 shared bank slots
- 5 training vouchers
- increase of the credit limit to 2 billion credits
Per character, you also receive:
- 30 inventory slots
- 60 bank slots
- 2 bridge officer slots

Existing subscriptions continue
This is how it will proceed. It is no longer possible to take out a regular subscription from now on. However, the lifetime subscription will continue to exist. Those who still have a subscription can continue to use it along with all the benefits. The veteran rewards will also remain. The change takes effect immediately.
Currently, the developers of Star Trek Online are preparing the new expansion Victory is Life.
