Pathfinder Online was one of the first MMORPGs to successfully fund itself through Kickstarter. Fans spent $1,091,194 in 2012 to bring the game to life. Now, 9 years later, the game is finally being shut down. However, the developers promised a conclusion to the story.
What kind of MMORPG is this? Pathfinder Online launched its Kickstarter campaign in November 2012, where over 200 people spent at least 500 dollars on the game. It then entered Alpha in 2014 and was released in a kind of Early Access in July 2015.
The MMORPG focused on sandbox elements and promised the following features in its campaign:
- A classless system
- Player housing in the open world
- Players should always be useful to the group, regardless of their level
- Trade should play an important role
- No grind
However, Pathfinder Online struggled with several issues and never achieved significant success. In fact, it even faced financial problems and shutdown shortly after its release in 2015.
What happens now? As the developers now announce, the servers of the MMORPG will be shut down on November 28, 2021. The reason for this is the small number of players, due to which Pathfinder Online can no longer be financially sustainable.
However, there will be an update in October that concludes the story of the game before it is shut down in November.
Are there refunds? Yes, anyone who spent money on game time in the MMORPG after May 1 will receive a proportional refund. Certain purchasable content like Base Camps and Freeholds will also be refunded. However, there will be no refund for the original Kickstarter payment.
Pathfinder is considered one of the worst MMORPGs ever
Is it worth trying the game now? That really depends on what you expect from the game. Pathfinder Online is not among the best MMORPGs, but is considered one of the worst by many MMO veterans.
The MMORPG YouTuber KiraTV tried Pathfinder in October 2020 and was shocked at how poor the game looks, how weak its interface is, and how miserable the onboarding is. The number of active players is also extremely low.
However, those who enjoy disaster tourism in MMORPGs might consider giving Pathfinder Online a chance.
