Phantasy Star Online 2: New Genesis was released on Steam, PC, and Xbox in June 2021. However, there was criticism at launch for the lack of mid and endgame content. This is exactly what the first major update addresses, which was released on December 15.
What kind of game is it? New Genesis is essentially an extension of Phantasy Star Online 2. You play as an independent character exploring a brand new world within the same universe. This world, however, resembles an MMORPG more than the original game did.
Both games run through the same launcher, and you can even transfer your character back and forth, with only the appearance remaining, but not the attributes or equipment.
At launch, New Genesis reached nearly 60,000 concurrent players on Steam at its peak. Although players praised the classes and modes of movement in the game – you can even fly and jump very far and high – the numbers dropped significantly just one month after release.
The main reasons cited were the lack of content. After about 30 hours, players should have seen the majority of the game’s content.
What has happened now? Today, on December 15, the first major patch has been deployed, which includes several significant new features, including a completely new area. An overview of the update can be found in this video:
New Area and New Level Cap as Highlights
What exactly is in the update? With the December patch, the new open region Retem is introduced into the game. It includes sand dunes and very rocky terrain. In this area, you can fight new monsters and the giant boss Gigantix, as well as gather new materials.
The update also includes:
- A new story chapter
- An increase in the level cap from 20 to 35
- New skills for each class
- New events and login rewards
For those who haven’t tried Phantasy Star Online 2: New Genesis yet, now is a great time to check out the MMORPG.
What does PSO2 cost? Nothing, as both the old version and New Genesis are Free2Play. You can choose to install them through Steam, Epic Games, or the Microsoft Store on PC or play on Xbox One or Xbox Series X/S.
