The players of RuneScape are considered tough when it comes to challenges. These can take place both in the MMORPG and in real life, for example, when gaming for a long time. However, one player is going overboard and wants to know from the developers whether a severed body part can continue to play alone or if that counts as cheating.
What a crazy request! The user Planting_shade shares on Reddit that he had a diabetic foot and had to have a toe amputated because of it. He was allowed to take it home with him and has now mummified it in such a way that he can use it freely.
Since the toe used to be a part of his body, he now wants to know if he can place it on the space bar to automatically collect salt.
Since it technically is a part of my body, I seriously wonder if I can use it for six hours of the best mining experience while holding down the space bar. It’s my toe. It’s heavy enough to press down the space bar on my laptop. Personally, I think that’s a good argument. I definitely sleep better at night knowing my toe is working hard for me in the salt mines.
What does he mean by the salt mines? With a patch in July 2023, salt deposits were introduced where you don’t have to do anything other than press the space bar to earn about 10,000 mining XP per hour. However, after 6 hours, the game automatically kicks you out due to inactivity.
These 6 hours could of course be completed without having to sit at the PC using Planting_shade’s “method“.
The thread exploded immediately, receiving over 2,500 upvotes, and even the developers commented on it.

What do the developers say? In the thread itself, JagexLight spoke up. He wished the user all the best and asked him to take care of his remaining fingers and toes. They are “very important.”
An answer to the player’s question was supposed to come in a blog post on Wednesday. However, it was announced there that the method itself would be nerfed (via RuneScape):
Since today’s update, the Duke’s salt deposits tire out if mined for more than five minutes at a time, and you must take a break.
The fundamental question – whether a severed toe can be used for AFK playing – remains unanswered.
The terms and conditions state only that no special software, hardware, or third-party methods may be used. An amputated body part shouldn’t count as any of these three categories.
