The MMORPG Oldschool RuneScape is meant to remind players of the old times and the beginnings of the game from 2001. Even though it is one of the older games in the genre, RuneScape and its players manage to create buzz every now and then.
What item did the player find? A player in Oldschool RuneScape had incredible luck when opening a loot bag filled with various gemstones. These bags can be obtained from various merchants in the game and contain 40 gemstones.
Except in this particular case. For as a Reddit post shows, the player named “OhKyle” received an “uncut Onyx” from this bag:
The path to this item initially doesn’t seem difficult: the player opens the bag and receives one of the rare gemstones. However, specifically, 5 of them are supposed to have a completely normal drop rate, while the uncut Onyx is among the rarest items in the game.
Considering that the chance of finding this gemstone is already 1 in 40 when opening a bag, and then combining this with the drop rate of the Onyx, the chance of finding this gemstone is practically 1 in 2.5 million.
What makes the find so special? The uncut Onyx is a very rare item in the MMORPG. So far, “OhKyle” is only the second player who is said to have found this item – or from whom it has been heard that he found it.
In 2020, it was announced over X.com (formerly Twitter) that the first player found this item.
One of the rarest items in the game, but it’s not that valuable
How much is the item worth? The more or less sad thing about the find is that the Onyx is rare, but actually not that valuable.
While you can craft powerful jewelry from the stone or sell it well, both of these options are not as overwhelming as one would assume for such a rate – especially considering that you can also get the uncut Onyx from a boss, with a drop rate of 1 in 1000.
The find by the player “OhKyle” is thus really only special because he simply had a ton of luck. For example, the user DewDropDreamer3 commented under the Reddit post: “1/100,000,000 chance? You should play the lottery! On the other hand, who needs real wealth when you can have a shiny black stone in a 2001 medieval clicking simulator?”
In response, he received many replies stating that it wouldn’t work that way, and as the user anon74492 wrote, “OhKyle” has now exhausted all his luck and it’s certain that he will never win the lottery again.
