Requiem is an MMORPG by Gravity, the developer of Ragnarok Online. It was released in 2008 and was later published on Steam. However, in 2021, the game servers will be shut down. Nevertheless, Gravity is already planning a re-release.
What will happen to Requiem? Requiem: Rise of the Reaver (formerly Requiem: Bloodymare) will soon be shut down. This was announced by the former producer of the game. The game has only been maintained by a single person in recent years and has received very few updates. The exact date of the shutdown has not yet been disclosed.
On Steam, Requiem recently peaked at 27 players. Of the 640 reviews, only 68% are positive.
However, the developer Gravity does not want the MMORPG to die. A new “Team Nightmare” has been formed. This team is to consist of several developers who will address old issues in the code and bugs, and also bring the economy into a more stable position. This is expected to take a few months.
Once that is accomplished, a new release of Requiem should take place. Afterwards, the team will even work on new content to expand the 13-year-old MMORPG. The community is to be heavily involved in this process.
You can watch the gameplay with the colleagues from MMOByte, who played Requiem in April 2021:
Requiem is a horror MMORPG with special boss monsters
What kind of game is this? Requiem: Rise of the Reaver is a free-to-play MMORPG set in a very dark and creepy world. This world has been rendered nearly uninhabitable due to an incident.
In the world, you will encounter various monsters, including giant robots, flesh monsters, demons, and winged creatures that will beat you up with their babies. There are also the Nightmare creatures, powerful bosses that can appear in low-level areas at certain times.
- In the game, you have access to 4 different playable races, each with 2 classes that further split into 2 specializations. In total, there are 16 classes.
- The combat system is tab-targeting and rather slow-paced.
- Everything feels somewhat brutal, and blood can be seen.
- Graphically, however, the game has aged significantly.
In reviews, Requiem is particularly praised for having a horror aspect, setting it apart from other games in the genre. However, it faces heavy criticism for its very repetitive quests.
Moreover, there are frequent complaints that the MMORPG doesn’t start at all. This is likely one of the problems that “Team Nightmare” is set to look into in the future.
Who would be interested in a re-release? Requiem is aimed more at old school players who are also interested in a horror MMORPG. Most games in the genre tend to focus more on fantasy or sci-fi. If you find that interesting and were not put off by the MMOByte video, you should keep an eye on the re-release.
What do you think about Requiem? Is the re-release worth it, or do you shed no tears for the game?
Another MMORPG that was released in 2021 is doing very poorly. Here, a complete shutdown is looming:
