The German sandbox MMORPG Albion Online will already be 6 years old this summer. Recently, the number of players skyrocketed – This is how it came to the success.
Albion Online has been on the market since 2017 with its own client, and the MMORPG launched on Steam in 2018. It comes from the German developer Sandbox Interactive.
9x more players than at the Steam release
When it was released on Steam, the number of players was just under 2,800, shortly after it dropped to below 1,000, which is very low for an MMORPG.
In April 2019 Albion switched from Buy2Play to Free2Play, which also drove the numbers up. At that time, about 13,000 people were playing the MMORPG, and the number stabilized in the following months between 8,000 and 11,000.
Currently, 25,800 people are playing the MMORPG, and two days ago, it even reached its all-time peak (via SteamDB).
Since the MMORPG offers its own client outside of Steam and is also available for mobile devices, the actual number of players is likely higher.

Albion started new servers with “Albion East”
On March 20, 2023, Asian servers of the MMORPG went live with Albion East. Albion Online opened servers set up in Singapore.
This applies not only to players from Asia but globally. It is therefore a new, fresh version of Albion, which, according to the numbers, leads to great popularity. Players can start fresh there, like in the fresh starts of the MMORPG New World in November 2022.
However, many players report problems with ping. Logical, when you use Asian servers and are located in Europe. Asian players, on the other hand, are happy to no longer have to play with extremely high pings (via Reddit).
What kind of game is this anyway? Albion Online is a sandbox MMORPG in which you explore a fantasy world inspired by the famous Arthur saga. It offers an open world with various biomes that players can explore.
It gives players many options to shape the MMORPG. All items are crafted by players, and the economy depends on them as well.
PvP plays an important role in the MMORPG. In some areas, there is even full-loot PvP, meaning you lose all your items when you die. Players love it.
In the combat system, you are what you wear – there are no fixed classes. Depending on the weapon and equipment, your character’s skills change.
How much does it cost? Basically, Albion Online is free, but there is a possible premium membership. This then secures you some advantages like more loot, lower taxes on the market, and faster progression of your skills. 30 days cost 15 dollars.
