With the latest addon Ravenloft, the MMORPG Neverwinter shows its creepy side. But with The Heart of Fire, it’s going to be fun.
Neverwinter shows many facets. Classic D&D adventures around the city of Neverwinter, tough challenges in the jungle, horror elements in Ravenloft, and now humor is the focus.
The expansion The Heart of Fire is now available for PC. Console players have to wait a bit longer.
A fun adventure awaits you
What is The Heart of Fire about? This time, the story revolves around the headquarters of the company Acquisitions Incorporated. This company deals with the more or less legal procurement of valuables. Together with Omin Dran, Jim Darkmagic (the German voice of Nerdfactory), and Walnut Dankgrass (voiced in the German version by Lara Loft), you set out in search of a valuable treasure.
However, not everything goes smoothly with the undertaking. You’ll end up clashing with the Zhentarim during the Manycoins bank heist, have to do a giant a favor, and infiltrate a Beholder congress.
What makes The Heart of Fire special? The new expansion fully embraces humor. No wonder, as the adventure was developed by Jerry Holkins and Mike Krahulik, the founders of Penny Arcade. The webcomic Penny Arcade has stood for a lot of humor since 1998. Accordingly, you can expect many funny situations in the expansion as well.
For example, your companions are not necessarily the ones you would choose for dangerous adventures.
Lots of new features in the expansion
What The Heart of Fire offers: With the expansion, you will face many challenges again. Additionally, the MMO is being revamped in some places. Here’s what’s included:
- A new campaign full of absurd situations and lots of humor
- The Manycoins bank heist as a new encounter
- A revamp of the crafting system
- You now earn Astral Diamonds directly upon completing dungeons and other content
- Class balance has been adjusted
- The loot system has been revamped
Why is Neverwinter focused on humor now? The Heart of Fire shows that Neverwinter can still deliver surprising content even after five years. D&D and fantasy are not just about grim dungeons, dragons, and the undead. The Pen&Paper template itself offers adventures where humor plays a big role. This way, players get something “different” that hasn’t been seen in Neverwinter before.
This is how the humorous adventure is received by players: Generally, fans are enthusiastic about The Heart of Fire. Not only about the humorous and thus “refreshing” approach of the campaign but also about the adjustments. Most notably the new crafting system.
- Anastiel says on Steam: “Ohhh, I love it!”
However, there are some players who find The Heart of Fire “out of place” due to the humor.
- Auron writes in the official forum: “I understand the intention behind The Heart of Fire, but I believe that the original development team is not behind it. It feels out of place and reminds me of annoying YouTubers, mixed with an episode of Teen Titans GO!”
