In a developer livestream, the creators of Lord of the Rings Online have finally announced a major graphics update. More information is expected in January, but here’s what we already know, summarized for you by MeinMMO.
What happened with Lord of the Rings Online? In an approximately one-hour video discussing the upcoming expansion Fate of Gundabad, the developers provided many answers regarding new content for the MMORPG.
They not only addressed the upcoming innovations in Fate of Gundabad, which is set to be released on November 10, but also content beyond that.
They spoke about a graphics update related to an update of the so-called Lua API, which is currently in the planning phase.
What is in the update? This has only been briefly outlined so far. We currently know the following contents:
- New visual effects and improved animations
- Better support for 4K monitors
- Optimized customization options for the UI
- More customization options for the world map
- Improvements in the quest tracker
When the update will come is still unknown. They are currently in the planning phase and putting together a team to handle this extensive task.
What else was discussed in the video? In addition to numerous improvements related to the new class in Lord of the Rings Online, there was also talk of potential future races. The developers confirmed that the River Hobbit will most likely be the next playable race.
There was also discussion about the recent changes to legendary items and how they want to further improve them.

Is the PS5 version coming after all?
What is the situation with the PS5 version? At an investors’ conference at the end of 2020, it was stated that in 2022 there should be an improved version of Lord of the Rings Online. This would be optimized for next-gen consoles and promise prettier graphics.
Since this announcement, the team behind the MMORPG has remained silent about it. There is also no further information in the video.
However, the confirmation of the overall graphics update could pave the way for exactly such a implementation. However, more is required for a next-gen version of an old MMORPG than just new graphics. So it still remains to be seen if and when these versions might be released.
