The MMORPG Guild Wars 2 plans significant changes to the matchmaking of the “World vs. World” system. The changes were to be tested in a beta that started on Friday. The beta was initially supposed to last a week, but very soon the experiment was over: the beta was canceled prematurely. The issues were too great.
This was the plan for the beta:
- The beta was to run from September 24 to October 1.
- The idea was to change the “World vs. World” of Guild Wars 2: a new matchmaking system was to be introduced to sort players, guilds, and even alliances into new teams.
- With the changes, ArenaNet wanted to address the changed server population. The idea was that fairer teams would emerge; at least until October 1, when the beta was supposed to end and return to the original state.
This went wrong: However, the beta did not last until October 1, but ended on the same day it started. ArenaNet canceled the experiment on Friday evening.
ArenaNet stated that they encountered a variety of problems and therefore decided to revert to the old system.
Shortly after the beta started, ArenaNet admitted on Twitter that “players are being matched into the wrong match-ups”.
They are looking into the problem. However, shortly thereafter, the message came that the beta was canceled and the system would be reset.
Players are disappointed but understanding
Here are the reactions: Players are largely disappointed with the change. A lot of mockery is directed at ArenaNet, since they have been working on this change for 4 years. It is said in the official forum post that things should first be tested internally before being released.
However, there are also some who defend ArenaNet: Here users say that this is why it is called a “beta TEST”, and one must expect that things go wrong. Furthermore, they appreciate that ArenaNet ended the experiment quickly rather than allowing WvW to be broken over the weekend.
