Nexon, the Korean company behind games like Riders of Icarus and MapleStory, is currently looking for employees for a new AAA MMORPG. What makes this particularly interesting is that it is also being developed for PC.
What kind of game is it? Through a new job description from Nexon, which has been translated by the website MMOCulture, it is possible to roughly guess what kind of title is being developed:
- The MMORPG is a completely new IP. So it won’t be MapleStory 3 or anything like that.
- It is supposed to take place in a fantasy world resembling the Middle Ages.
- The game world is supposed to be completely open and free of loading screens.
- It will be a AAA game in Unreal Engine 4, for both PC and mobile.
- PvP battles and castle sieges are supposed to play a role.
- The game will be presented in an isometric perspective.
In doing so, Nexon is following a trend initiated by games like Lost Ark, which is set to be released here soon thanks to Amazon, and Project TL, the new title from NCSoft. Both also rely on the combination of isometric perspective and MMORPG.
Diablo 4 will also utilize this view again. However, the new title from Blizzard will, unlike the three previous games, not be a full-fledged MMO, even though you are expected to encounter other players regularly.
What about the release of the new game? So far, there is neither a name nor images or artworks for Nexon’s new MMORPG. The title image belongs to the game Lost Ark.
A release is therefore unlikely in the foreseeable future.
Nexon knows how to create large MMORPGs, as shown in the past
What has Nexon developed so far? Nexon is mainly known in the West for MMORPGs like MapleStory or Riders of Icarus, where you can ride many different animals.
However, the studio really earns a lot of money with Dungeon Fighter Online. The title is one of the most successful games in the world and made an astounding 1.6 billion dollars in 2019.
Recently, Nexon released the MMORPG V4 both in Korea and here in the West. This game also relied on game versions for PC and mobile, and it worked quite well. However, pay-to-win and auto-fights severely spoiled my fun with V4.
Whether the new game can handle this aspect better will be shown in the future.
