After Dreamblade, the developers of the MMORPG “Ghost” have now introduced the next 3 classes. Additionally, there were new details about the plans for the game’s combat system.
Which classes are planned for Ghost? In the video series “Word on the Street” on YouTube, former WoW developers Greg Street and Brian Holinka discussed the current status of their MMORPG project “Ghost”. They introduced 3 new classes:
- Songbird is a mix of bard and holy priest, who is supposed to heal and support the group with its songs.
- Tempest is the dancer that complements the Songbird, who relies on the powers of the elements and can unleash destructive storms with his dance steps. Greg Street also draws a comparison to the X-Men.
- Sphinx Guard is a magic-wielding tank that uses a large tower shield to protect his companions.
The 3 archetypes join the already introduced Dreamblade in June 2025, who charges into battle with a large two-handed sword and is reminiscent of a knight of the round table. 30 different classes are planned for the launch of “Ghost”.
The developers emphasize that there will be no gender lock, even though the artworks currently show only female Tempest. Additionally, each class is supposed to fulfill a clear role, but still offer more than just healing, buffing, or ranged damage.
Combat is of the highest priority
What else do the developers reveal? Alongside the video, a new article by Greg Street has gone live on the official website of Fantastic Pixel Castle, focusing on combat in “Ghost”. The studio head explains that he fell in love with WoW (and later worked for Blizzard) mainly because the combat felt so good.
This is exactly what he wants people to say about their own MMORPG later, which is why there is a high priority on designing the combat experience. At the same time, he explains that his experiences with Age of Empires, WoW, and League of Legends have shown one thing:
Fights only feel good when everything clicks together in the end. Reaching this point is very difficult, especially because fights often feel bad up until that point. So for a long time, you don’t know if you’re on the right track. Therefore, you should only take occasional risks and innovations.
What does this mean for Ghost? The developers want to offer a mix of innovations and proven design standards for the combat system.
- Movement: Characters should feel very mobile with sliding and gliding maneuvers. They should also be able to nimbly jump over smaller obstacles. However, there will not be a climbing function. This should feel noticeably different from many other MMORPGs.
- Target selection: They rely on the tried-and-true tab-targeting system known from WoW and Final Fantasy XIV, so healers can have full control over their heals.
- Abilities: Generally, they also like the systems from WoW and FFXIV here, but want to keep the number of skills low enough so that the MMORPG can also be played well with a controller. Nevertheless, the rotations should offer a certain depth.
- Holy Trinity: The Holy Trinity of tanks, healers, and damage dealers is established.
- Unavoidable damage: It should not be possible to constantly avoid all damage from enemies through evasive maneuvers. Equipment upgrades should play a role in survival and performance.
If you want to take a first look at the current prototype of “Ghost”, you can do so! However, keep in mind that this is a very early version with placeholders. The actual assets still need to be developed: Former WoW lead shows his new MMORPG after only 4 months of development
