A part of the community of the MMORPG EVE Online has called for a strike against the game, with complaints about the monetization of the sci-fi MMO. They believe new changes have gone in the wrong, “Pay2Win” direction. Upset content creators have started a boycott. EVE Online accidentally promoted this call itself through their Twitch channel.
What is being protested against?
- Some content creators of EVE Online have called for a “Blackout”. They do not want to broadcast any more EVE Online content, but rather transmit a message stating, “this video game wants to monetize your gameplay. You do not need your credit card to buy a spaceship.”
- The protest specifically targets CCP’s decision to offer a special spaceship for €25. CCP was aware of the community protests but brought the spaceship to the shop anyway – this is what they are protesting against.
- People say: It is not so much about this one spaceship, but about the precedent it sets. EVE Online would increasingly lean towards “Pay2Win”; initially, skill points were sold in packs, now this one ship – what comes next? Perhaps a “buy one, get two” battleship or one of the most expensive and sought-after titan ships directly for money?
EVE Online embeds the wrong channel on Twitch
What was curious: Do not imagine the protest as a massive event. As MassivelyOp reports, it was a rather small group of content creators who joined the boycott call.
But one of the content creators was the website “New Eden Post”, which broadcasted this protest call through their Twitch channel.
Since the Twitch channel of EVE Online was offline at the time, CCP routinely embedded the channel of “New Eden Post” in their own and thus streamed the boycott call through their own Twitch channel.
This is how fans reacted to the mistake: Reddit celebrated this error:
- “This is hilarious and at the same time really sad”
- “This is a good way to protest publicly, folks. If you have time and space electricity, help clog up the EVE category with the stuff. That puts pressure on CCP”
- “It’s their own fault, the community has warned them for years, but they refuse to listen to anyone but themselves.”
After the post was on Reddit, CCP quickly noticed the error and ended the broadcast of the foreign stream. However, the community was pleased with the successful coup.
Even if one user points out: This strike is not a real threat, but rather quite empty. Because many who have been complaining about the alleged “Pay2Win” in EVE Online for years would still continue to play all the time.
