The MMORPG Crowfall has been in development for some time now and has already been postponed several times. Now, the boss J. Todd Coleman is sure: 2021 is the release and he is looking forward to it.
What’s the status of Crowfall? In a new Founder‘s Update, the Creative Director J. Todd Coleman talks about the plans for Crowfall 2021. The MMORPG was actually supposed to be released several times, but the release seems to be cursed:
- At the end of 2017, it was said: Instead of a release, there will be a “soft launch” in spring 2018
- In 2018, work was done on Crowfall, but new features slowed development down – It was supposed to be released in 2019
- At the beginning of 2020, it was stated: Crowfall is 99.99% finished, only one bug is causing problems
Finally, in 2020, the Corona crisis hit, many studios had to work from home and many releases were delayed. The beta of Crowfall was initially supposed to start in February 2020, but began only in May. Since then, the developers have apparently been working on fixing the last bugs and completing features – despite the pandemic.
Release of Crowfall 2021 – This time for real?
This is what the boss says: In the Founder‘s Update in December 2020, Coleman gives a subtle hint about the release of Crowfall 2021. He says:
Next year, when I write the Founder‘s Update for the end of 2021, it will deal with a game that is there, not one that is still to come.
Coleman knows that there is still work to be done. Crowfall is not completely finished yet, but it is far enough along that he can see it being completed now. In our list of releases for MMOs and MMORPGs in 2021 on MeinMMO, Crowfall is already listed.
This is what Crowfall offers: The boss praises in the blog post some of the features that particularly interest him for the release. These include:
- Castles
- The tournament system
- Improvements in frame rate through work with Unity
- (finally) a balance adjustment

Finally, Crowfall received an updated, better skill system and is being developed further together with the community. Features like these, according to Coleman, are thanks to the community that actively participates in testing and provides feedback.
Even on our site, MeinMMO, Crowfall is still hotly debated despite the delays. MMORPG expert and author Alexander Leitsch even finds: Crowfall is the MMORPG that New World should have been.
