It is usually considered illegal to sell characters in an MMORPG for money. However, the classic Tibia now allows this, with major implications for the black market.
What are the Character Auctions? Since August 25, it has been legal to sell characters and accounts in the MMORPG Tibia. This was previously illegal and was done via Ebay through a “black market,” as is known in other online role-playing games.
The trading of characters in Tibia now occurs through an auction and is subject to certain rules. However, these auctions allow you to sell your characters without facing consequences.
Among the requirements for character trading are:
- The character must be at least level 8
- They may not belong to a guild
- They must not be marked with a skull
- The character must not be prepared for deletion

What does such an auction cost? For starters, you must pay 50 Tibia Coins (approximately 2 €) to participate in the auction.
Subsequently, the developer studio CipSoft retains 12% of the sale price.
Why does CipSoft allow trading in characters? Previously, characters were traded illegally through Ebay. This also led to fraudulent actions.
Especially in Venezuela, the illegal trade of gold and accounts has proliferated. This has gone so far that some players were able to earn more money playing the MMORPG and farming gold than with regular jobs.
With the legalization of account and character sales, CipSoft is now cracking down on black market trading. Players can be assured that the Character Auctions are 100% legal and safe. There are no frauds taking place. Whoever buys a character gets it, and no one needs to fear a ban. Because the trade is now legal.
This is a significant blow to the black market, which was necessary since players simply traded characters and are now getting security.
With a new online game, the developers also allow players to earn money.
How has the legal trade been received? Since the introduction of the Character Auctions, around 12,000 auctions have taken place. Usually, characters up to level 200 are sold. However, there has even been a hero of level 1163 who sold for 210,000 Tibia Coins. That is approximately 4050 euros, depending on the current exchange rate.
