The MMO Worlds Adrift is shutting down. In a video, the developers explain the reasons behind this decision.
What is Worlds Adrift? The sandbox MMO Worlds Adrift was only available in Early Access on Steam since May 2018 and focused on massive airships and flying islands that players could reach.
Players had a significant role in the sandbox experience. Many of the islands were created by gamers and uploaded into the game. The world was vast and players could discover things everywhere.
However, it is now coming to an end with Worlds Adrift. In July 2019, the servers will be shut down. Players have only about a month left to experience adventures in their airship.
This is how the developers explain the end of Worlds Adrift
These are the reasons the developer gives for the shutdown: In a video to the community, the developers of Bossa Studios explain their motivations. The game simply did not achieve the popularity needed for it to be financially viable.
Additionally, too much focus was placed on functionality rather than creating an exciting gameplay experience.
A letter to the fans was also published. Here is an excerpt:
Worlds Adrift simply did not achieve the popularity it needed to continue. The challenges associated with our ambitious project meant that all our efforts were directed at making the game functional instead of making it the experience we envisioned.
As a result, we failed to develop a game that could capture the imaginations of millions of people. Developing an MMO like Worlds Adrift is a significant financial commitment and unfortunately, the game is simply no longer commercially viable.
To provide a special experience in the last months of the game, all cosmetic items in the in-game shop will be given to every player. Additionally, the founder captains of Worlds Adrift will receive a free copy of Surgeon Simulator and I Am Bread as a thank you for participating in this journey and to give insight into the kind of experiences we want to create for the future. The names of the founder captains will also be forever immortalized on the game’s website, which will remain live as a tribute to the world we built together.

What does this mean for the players? Fans of Worlds Adrift should take advantage of the last full month of gameplay. After all, all cosmetic items from the shop are also being given away.
Additionally, all players who made a purchase in the in-game shop since April 29 will receive a full refund.
How are the players reacting? Many fans are dismayed by this news. They do not understand it, as Worlds Adrift was a brilliant game for them.
On Reddit , a fan writes: “Shit. The first minute I saw this, I wondered if this was some kind of April Fool’s video. Can we get the option to host private servers or something? I would hate not to be able to explore and build anymore. The grappling hook system is one of the best things I’ve found in any video game.”
“Is there no way you can make it single-player playable? I would appreciate it if I could still play the game I spent money on,” writes oasis_zer0.
What do you think about this? Were you also a big fan of Worlds Adrift? This is not the first MMO to close in 2019:
