A Korean site has now compiled a selection of the 12 blockbuster MMORPGs that South Koreans are most looking forward to.
The Western MMORPG scene is quite exhausted, recently we presented the 5 most promising titles, that we can expect here in the next 2 years. There were already 3 Asian titles among them. The offering from the West itself is rather sparse: After the disappointments of recent years, the MMO market is considered a tricky terrain. The gaming industry here tends to focus on manageable mobile games or is directly programming their own MOBA.
The Korean site Thisisgame has meanwhile released a compilation of 12 MMORPGs that Koreans can look forward to. Here, trailers are mostly edited together, which do not provide an objective view of the actual games, but at least give a taste of what is happening in the Korean market. And it is still booming – thanks to the local conditions (PC Cafés as a cultural meeting point).
With the “rather classic” Bless and the bombastic Lost Ark (a kind of Diablo 3 variant), there are already early favorites for a port to the West, once they are finished in Korea. Other significantly more colorful games like Tree of Savior or Maplestory 2 might be hard to imagine in our market, but there are also interesting concepts, like Civilization Online by ArcheAge creator XLGames, which aims to extract completely new facets from the well-known Civ franchise.
In any case, you can see a clearly broader mix in the titles than in our MMO culture.
