The online shooter Anthem is under fire again. An unfortunate wording in a forum post has disappointed players taking the opportunity to go after BioWare. They believe the company wanted to declare their AAA game “Anthem” as an Early Access title in retrospect.
This is the reason for the anger: BioWare’s big post about the future of Anthem (via reddit) starts with the sentence: “It has now been 10 weeks since we launched in Early Access.”
This is what people are upset about: For some who are already angry with Anthem, the sentence is an attempt by BioWare to position Anthem retrospectively as an “Early Access” title.
As a game that is still in the trial period, on which people are still working, for which expectations should not be so high.
The reactions to the introduction with “Early Access” are partly hostile:
- People say they paid a lot of money for the title, which was sold as a AAA product, not as an Early Access title.
- the moderate criticism is still to accuse the writers of expressing themselves unluckily – they should pay more attention to their wording.
Apparently, the mention of the term “Early Access” catches many users off guard and drives them to fury.

This is what it actually means: BioWare means with “Early Access” the week from February 15 to February 22, during which the game was accessible earlier for owners of special versions than for everyone else (early access).
Therefore, there doesn’t seem to be any malicious intent behind it – it was an unfortunate phrasing.
This is the problem: BioWare’s word choice 10 weeks later is at odds with the actual gamer conventions:
- Titles are usually seen as Early Access that can be played well before the actual release and are developed together with the community – these titles are usually available at a discounted price.
- However, BioWare used “Early Access” for Anthem in the sense of “You can play a week earlier than everyone else” – for this circumstance, the term “Headstart” had actually become established by then.
In the current situation of Anthem, this wording is backfiring, although the excitement surely lies in the current state of the game. If everything were going great with Anthem, hardly anyone would have been bothered by the phrasing.
The mood is very tense for Anthem after the last weeks.
