An exploit in League of Legends allowed the champion Ornn to secure kills across the entire map. But the penalties came immediately.
In the MOBA League of Legends (LoL), patches are regularly released that bring new champions or rework old champions. Such reworks or improvements can sometimes bring along bugs that can have devastating consequences. A bug regarding the hero Ornn is currently the talk of the town – but penalties have already been issued.
What is it about? The character Ornn was recently reworked, but a nasty exploit snuck in. It can happen that Ornn’s W ability does not have the actual short range, but can span the entire map. Worse still – it will attack all targetable characters across the whole map.
This affects enemy heroes, enemy minions, and towers as well. Those who exploited this bug were able to secure kills across the entire map. A fair match was then out of the question.
How Tencent reacted: Since the exploitation of the bug mostly occurred in China, Tencent took strict action here. More than 3,300 accounts were penalized with a harsh punishment. They are banned from participating in League of Legends games for the next 3 years.
It is still unknown whether European or American players were banned for exploiting this exploit.
League of Legends continues to be popular – it recently set a viewership record.
Can the exploit be accidentally activated? Basically, no. The exploit only works in a few places across the entire map, and one has to deliberately force it. The excuse that one accidentally activated it probably won’t hold up. You can see the effects of it in this video:
However, we strongly advise against attempting to replicate the exploit or trying to bring it about – unless a long ban in League of Legends doesn’t bother you.
Currently, this ex-coach of a LoL team is facing serious problems – without any exploit.
Would you exploit such bugs as long as possible? Or can the penalties for that not be harsh enough?
