Fall damage in Minecraft can be deadly. However, this is not necessary. With a little trick, you can completely avoid fall damage.
In Minecraft, there are countless ways to unleash your creativity, as well as seemingly endless ways to die. One of the most common causes of death is likely fall damage. After all, who hasn’t jumped off a mountain while escaping or fallen into a deep cave while digging? Fall damage is often the reason you respawn and have to collect your items again. But it is also possible to avoid fall damage.
The user P0mid0rka has pointed out a small game glitch in the Minecraft subreddit that works in the current Java version (1.15.2). He jumps from a greater height and suffers no fall damage.
Accidentally found a glitch from r/Minecraft
How does the glitch work? The avoidance of fall damage occurs when the character lands on the edge of a block. It is important that the block next to it is air – it doesn’t work with water. Even though the cause of the glitch is not 100% clear, players have a theory that seems plausible:
Minecraft only checks which block is directly below the character when falling. Since the hitbox of the character is large enough to also catch on adjacent blocks, it can happen that the block directly below the character is air, but the character stays stuck to the block next to it (like wood) and lands. In this case, Minecraft does not calculate fall damage because as long as the player “lands” on air, no damage is done.
The trick could also help speedrunners in Minecraft to set new records.
P0mid0rka has demonstrated that it works even at greater heights in a second clip:
Is the trick easy to use? For most players, replicating this trick will require a lot of practice. To exploit it effectively, you need to make a pretty precise landing on the edge of a block. The area for this is only a few pixels wide. A few millimeters too far forward or back and it won’t work.
However, once you have mastered the trick, it is a cool way to avoid fall damage safely – or just to show off a bit in front of friends on the same server.
Minecraft is also one of our top games for kids during the Corona crisis.
What do you think of this trick? A cool thing? Or a bug that shouldn’t be exploited?
