The caves of Minecraft will soon be like food. More specifically, like cheese and spaghetti. We explain what this means.
The next big patch for Minecraft is the “Caves&Cliffs” update, which will significantly reshape the game world next summer. As the name suggests, it mainly focuses on caves and cliffs, making them more exciting and interesting. There will be new creatures and game mechanics, but especially the formation of caves and underground spaces will change. The latest snapshot update has now made it clear how this will look: spaghetti and cheese.
That’s why caves are like spaghetti and cheese: In addition to the existing types of caves, there will be two more types that you can find everywhere in the world. These are “cheese and spaghetti,” as the developers themselves call them:
- Cheese caves are larger hollows of spaces that you can find. These are basically the holes in a cheese, spaced apart from each other.
- Spaghetti caves are long and narrow, stretching through a large part of the earth. They basically connect the cheese holes with each other or can reach into other cave systems. They can also be connected to the surface, then they are cave entrances.
Additionally, caves can be completely, partially, or entirely filled with water underground. This creates underwater lakes or even entire complexes filled with water, providing more variety.
How huge and amazing these new caves are will be shown in this YouTube video by slicedlime:
Minecraft maps are getting larger: Along with the latest patch, there is also a change in the size of the maps. They are increasing, both upwards and downwards. In the current test version, the lowest point is no longer Y: 0, but Y: -64. The highest point will increase to Y320. Overall, Minecraft will thus grow by over 120 blocks, allowing constructions to be even larger – or excavations into the depths to be even more confusing and deadly.
Can you play the changes now? Yes. Those using the Java client can simply download the snapshot version and try out how the new caves look and feel. However, please note that due to the changes in the height of the maps, you cannot load old worlds in the snapshot. They are not compatible with the latest version.
What do you think of the new cave system? Do you like the first impression? Or is there still a lot to be done?
