After many years, Minecraft introduces a coveted feature. From now on, you can set “waypoints” and will never get lost again.
A long-standing problem in Minecraft is navigation. Those who want to explore the game world and keep track need either countless maps or “cheat” a little by writing down the coordinates. But that may soon be a thing of the past. Because soon, you will be able to set waypoints with a Lodestone (magnet). This way, you can mark important locations and easily find them again.
What does the Lodestone do? The Lodestone can be used as a reference point for a compass. When applying the compass to a Lodestone, the compass will now align itself only with that location.
Normally, a compass always points to the spawn point of the respective world. However, with the Lodestone, you can mark locations of your choice, giving you a constant point of reference for the direction you need to go to reach the Lodestone again.
Does the Lodestone also work in the Overworld? Yes. Although the Lodestone is an object from the Nether, it can also be used in the Overworld or in the End. Therefore, it is now possible to officially place multiple “waypoints” in the game and connect them with a compass. This makes finding certain locations – like your own base – very easy again.
How much does the Lodestone cost? The Lodestone, however, is not cheap. Because in addition to 8 chiseled stone bricks, you also need a Netherite ingot, which is very hard to find in the Nether with the next update. So this is a costly investment, but it should be worth it for a main base.
What was it like before? There has not been a proper “in-game method” to set a waypoint in Minecraft until now. Instead, players have had to display the coordinates and manually write down important locations to find them. However, this is more of a workaround and is regarded by true survival fans as a “cheat.” Originally, it was not intended for players to permanently view coordinates via the console. But once that became popular, the option was added to the game.
From now on, there will be a “real” way for players to set waypoints in Minecraft. This is definitely helpful for a more rounded gaming experience.
By the way, the patch is not live yet – but the experimental “snapshot” version can be downloaded on PC via the launcher.
Minecraft is one of our top games – also for children – during the Corona crisis.
