Do you sometimes die in Minecraft? A new compass helps you not to lose all items – at least if you manage to craft it.
Dies in Minecraft is extremely annoying. Not only do you lose all carried items, but you also respawn at the last bed you slept in – and that can be quite far from the place of death. The most annoying deaths are those where you can no longer figure out exactly where you were – like deep in a cave complex or far away from your base.
The danger is great: The items are lost forever, as you won’t find the location of death again before they disappear.
There is soon a solution for this. Because Minecraft is introducing a compass that is only useful if you have died before.
What is this compass? The “Recovery Compass” helps you retrieve your items after death. As long as you hold the Recovery Compass in hand, its needle always points in the direction of the place where you last died. This makes it easy to get straight to your death location.
If you find yourself in the wrong dimension or haven’t died yet, the needle simply spins wildly because it cannot locate a place – just like it does with a conventional compass.
How to craft the “Recovery Compass”? For the Recovery Compass, you need a regular compass (i.e., 4 iron ingots and 1 redstone). Additionally, you need 8 “Echo Shards”, which you then arrange around the compass – and the “Recovery Compass” is ready and immediately usable.
“Echo Shards” are a new resource from the upcoming patch 1.19. You can only find them in the special chests of the “Ancient Cities”. This is a new, large complex that can spawn deep in your Minecraft world – but is also the domain of the terrifying Warden.
Of course, you should keep this compass in a chest near your bed, so you can quickly grab it when you have died. If you had it in your inventory before death and it then lies with all other items at your death location, that would be a bit ironic.
