In this guide, we will build an iron farm in Minecraft 1.17. It works with the Bedrock version and also with the Java version on PC. Beginners can easily recreate the farm and quickly farm a lot of iron from golems.
What kind of farm is this? With this farm, you can quickly farm a lot of iron at the beginning of your Minecraft world. You only need easily obtainable items like cobblestone, beds, water, lava, and signs. Our ingredient list will show you exactly what you need.
Keep in mind that this is an iron farm for beginners on PC, and it can still be expanded and enhanced.
Building an Iron Farm with These Ingredients – Item List
What do you need?
- 68 blocks of cobblestone
- Can also be other solid stones. In our example, we call it cobblestone.
- 5 beds
- 32 blocks of glass
- 1 bucket of water
- 1 bucket of lava
- 1 chest
- 4 signs
- 48 walls
- 3 hoppers
- 2 to 5 villagers

Guide – How to Build the Iron Farm
The beginning: First, scout the area and choose a nice spot for your iron farm. There should be no buildings nearby, or if there are, they should not allow iron golems to spawn on them. There should not be a village with active villagers nearby.
Start with cobblestone. Stack 8 blocks on top of each other and build upwards. The 8th block is the base of a platform – build a 5×5 block platform: 5 blocks wide, 5 blocks long.
Then place the beds as shown in the following image on the platform and place a cobblestone block on the free spots on your platform where there is no bed. This way, the cobblestone blocks will surround the platform, except for a spot where the foot of a bed is positioned at the edge. Make sure to place the beds exactly as shown in the picture.
Now place glass blocks on the cobblestone and above the foot of the bed at the edge. Glass surrounds your platform as a wall upwards. The glass wall is two blocks high.
Now you can place the villagers in your glass box. You need at least 5 of them. However, 2 are enough; if you throw carrots to your iron workers, they will breed. If possible, get all 5 villagers in right away.
In one corner of the glass, place the chest and on the three free blocks directly beside it, place three hoppers that you connect to the chest with a shift-click.
Now fill the rest of this level with a layer of cobblestone. This is how it will look in the following image:
The mob trap: Now fence off the platform with your wall around the chest+hoppers+cobblestone. The wall should be three blocks high.
On one side of the corner with the hoppers, place two signs: one on the lower wall block directly above a hopper and one on the middle wall block, directly above the first sign.
The 2 remaining signs are placed on the topmost wall block. However, they should not be placed directly above the hopper but in the middle of the wall to the left and right of the hopper. This leaves the block directly above the hopper free and makes room for the lava.
This is how it should look now:
Now fill the bucket with lava on the sign that is placed two spaces above the hopper. The lava should now be contained in the corner.
In the opposite corner, you fill the bucket with water on the ground. This way, the water flows directly towards the hopper and lava.
This is how the iron golem trap works
This is what happens: At night, the villagers will go to bed. During the day, iron golems spawn in your enclosed platform every few minutes.
The golems are driven directly into the lava by the water and defeated after several hits. The loot does not burn because the lava is not on the ground. Instead, the iron ingots fall directly into the hoppers and are then directed into the chest.
What you should know: An iron farm like this only works during the day. You should stay nearby and quickly sleep at night to ensure the farm operates efficiently.
How much iron do you earn? In our test, we earned 25 iron ingots in 15 minutes with one platform. If you want, you can set up the farm multiple times and farm even more iron.
Each iron golem drops 3 to 5 iron ingots. And if you’re lucky, you’ll get one or two flowers as well. While this might not be the fastest iron farm, it is a strong start for beginners.
