The Nether of Minecraft is coming alive. Two new species are entering the lava world, and with some of them, you can even trade in a primitive way.
Currently, the developers of Minecraft are regularly releasing new “snapshots”, which are test versions of the game. Each time there are new features and functions. The next patch mainly focuses on the Nether and even brought a type of ore that will replace diamonds as the best material.
But even more creatures are lurking in the Nether, as two new species have been added. The Hoglins and the Piglins. We will tell you what the new creatures are all about, what dangers they pose, and how you can trade with them.
These are the Hoglins: Hoglins resemble wild boars and are native to the purple forest. They are generally hostile and attack the player as soon as they come into sight. With 40 health points (20 hearts), they are quite sturdy and also have a devastating attack that not only deals high damage but also knocks the player into the air. The attack resembles that of an iron golem and can lead to the Hoglin knocking the player off a ledge – which is often fatal in the Nether.

Hoglins can also appear as babies. The babies are also aggressive and deal damage, but they flee as soon as they are hit by an attack.
Hoglins avoid the scent of warped fungi (a new type of mushroom in the Nether) and flee when warped fungi are nearby.

These are the Piglins: Piglins are a new species of “pig people” that you can encounter in the Nether. They are presumably the precursor to the zombie pigmen. Generally, Piglins are hostile towards players and attack with swords and crossbows. However, they have a preference for gold and can become neutral mobs. For that, the player must wear golden armor, then Piglins will no longer be hostile.
But beware! If you open a chest or mine a gold block near Piglins, they assume you want to steal those things and will attack immediately.
Piglins want your gold: The Piglins’ preference for gold actually goes even further: they accept gold ingots as currency for simple trading. For this, the player must either throw a gold ingot on the ground or directly “use” it on the Piglin. The Piglin will pick up the gold ingot and afterwards throw items on the ground for the player.
Through this trading method, you can obtain various items, some of which are:
- Nether Quartz
- Obsidian
- Ender Pearls
- Magma Cream
- Leather
- Warped Fungi
- Rotten Flesh
- Pork
- Nether Bricks
- many more items of low value
Additionally, you can make Piglins drop the item they are currently holding. If you want the crossbow, for example, you throw a golden tool on the ground. The Piglin will chase after their greed for gold and equip the golden tool and drop the crossbow (or any other non-gold item).
Piglins can also spawn as babies. Baby Piglins enjoy playing with baby Hoglins and run around. However, the adult versions of both species are hostile. Piglins hunt Hoglins when they are hungry.
Piglins cannot survive in the normal world, by the way. If you lead them through a Nether portal into the overworld, they will transform into zombie pigmen after about 20 seconds.
More use for gold: Generally, Piglins are a good reason to have a few gold ingots and a golden armor in your inventory. Gold armor is not suitable for fighting, as it gets destroyed very quickly, but it allows for trading with Piglins and peaceful passage through their areas. For long journeys through the Nether, gold armor may soon become a necessity.
What do you think of the new creatures and the overhaul of the Nether? Cool innovations or unnecessary rubbish?
