In Anthem, there are Shards and Coin. We will show you what can be purchased with the in-game and premium currency.
This is new: There are now new details regarding how Anthem handles microtransactions. It is clear that Shards will serve as a premium currency alongside the in-game currency Coin.
What can you buy with Shards? The premium currency “Shards” is intended to be used in Anthem only for purchasing cosmetic items. Shards exist alongside the standard currency Coin. These cosmetic items include armors in specific styles, emotes, or stickers. So it sounds like there are no gameplay advantages when spending Shards.
Can cosmetic items only be purchased with Shards? According to IGN, a large portion of the cosmetics can be bought with either Shards or Coin. So, there’s no need to resort to the premium currency necessarily. However, this has not been finalized and may change by the time of release.
New Javelin suits may cost money: The Javelin suits in Anthem are not really “only cosmetic”. The new suits may potentially cost money in the future. While there are currently no concrete plans regarding this, should BioWare release additional Javelin suits in the future, it is possible that these will only be unlockable using the premium currency.
However, this is more about a change in playstyle. These suits will not impact the rest of the game.
On the topic of loot boxes, there is also a clear stance:
Players should not be divided by a paywall
In this regard, BioWare is adamant: They do not want to split the community into two camps through purchasable content. There are big plans for what will happen with Anthem post-release and which content will be released. But none of this content will be behind a paywall.
What’s free? New story and content expansions as well as missions and daily, weekly, and monthly content drops will be available to you for free if you purchased Anthem.
