Microsoft fulfills a great wish of the users together with Seagate. They are presenting additional storage variants for the Xbox Series X|S. But who is it actually worth it for?
It’s been about a year since the Xbox Series X was officially released. Those who have managed to get a console despite the scarcity are also buying compatible accessories for their Xbox Series X.
However, the additional storage for the Xbox Series X is really expensive, and users had no option to access cheaper storage until now. The 1 TB storage for the Xbox Series X can be purchased on Amazon for 230 euros.
Now Microsoft, together with manufacturer Seagate, has introduced additional storage variants (via news.xbox.com).
Microsoft introduces 512 GB and 2 TB hard drives for Xbox Series X
What exactly has been introduced? Until now, there was only the 1 TB version of the internal storage expansion card. This year, more storage expansion cards with 512 GB and 2 TB each are to be released. This should please many users for whom 1 TB was either too expensive or too small.
What does the storage cost? In the USA, the 512 GB version is expected to cost $139.99, while the 2 TB version is expected to cost $399.99. The prices in euros are likely to be similar here.
When will the storage be available? The 512 GB version can already be pre-ordered and will be released in mid-November in the USA. Microsoft has not yet announced a specific release date.
In contrast to the smaller version, the 2 TB version is not expected to be available until December. Again, there is no official date yet. Currently, you can only order the 1 TB model on Amazon.

Xbox Series X|S: Is a storage expansion card worth it?
Do I need a storage expansion card? All games for the Xbox Series X can only be installed on the internal storage or the designated expansion.
- About 800 GB of free storage is available on the Xbox Series X.
- About 360 GB is usable for games and apps on the Xbox Series S.
Apps or game titles from the Xbox One, Xbox 360, or the original Xbox console, which run via backward compatibility on the new consoles, can be installed on USB storage. For this, you do not need internal storage, but you will not benefit from the advantages of the storage.
Is a storage upgrade worth it? Basically, it depends on your current situation whether such a storage upgrade is really worth it.
If you primarily play old games and do not need the speed boost, then a larger internal storage is only somewhat worthwhile, as you can also buy a cheaper external hard drive instead. External hard drives are generally significantly cheaper than Seagate’s storage expansion card.
However, if you want to benefit from the high speed and play all the top titles of the Xbox Series X|S, then there is currently no way around the storage expansion card. Because the card from Seagate is currently the only option to expand the internal storage. Whether there will be more options in the future depends entirely on Microsoft.
