During the E3 2018, there were not only new games to see that Microsoft presented at the press conference. Phil Spencer also teased a new Xbox or even several consoles.
Hardly has the Xbox One X been released, and Microsoft is already working on a new console. However, not much has been revealed about the upcoming Xbox.
Microsoft Confirms: We Are Working on New Consoles
A new Xbox is coming. As Phil Spencer from Microsoft revealed, the development team that designed the Xbox One X is already working on the successor console. Microsoft wants to ensure that all upcoming games can be played best on an Xbox.
Plural “Consoles” Used: It’s interesting that Phil Spencer used the plural “Consoles.” This indicates that Microsoft is planning to develop multiple versions of the console again.
The Rest is Speculation
Upgrade or something completely new? It is currently unclear what the new Xbox will look like. An upgrade like from Xbox One to Xbox One X is unlikely. It will probably be a completely new architecture. Nevertheless, it can be assumed that the console will be backwards compatible. After all, Microsoft places great importance on this feature even for the current consoles.
4K, VR, Streaming. We can assume that 4K resolution will be a focus, as even the Xbox One X was developed with an emphasis on 4K. VR could also play a role, as there is currently nothing from Microsoft on that front. Streaming is also conceivable, especially since there is a dedicated department for this at Microsoft.
However, it can be assumed that the next console generation will not rely entirely on streaming just yet. Fast internet is still simply not widely available. Additionally, there needs to be some kind of fail-safe in case the internet goes down. We are probably still a long way from a completely streaming console.
Release unknown. Phil Spencer has not yet spoken about when the new Xbox will be released. Eight years passed between the Xbox 360 (released in 2005) and the Xbox One (released in 2013). About four years between the release of the One and the One X (released in 2017). It is estimated that we will have to wait a few more years for the new console.
