Soccer player Mesut Özil is now a Twitch streamer. His game of choice is Fortnite. He is quite a solid player and you can hear how it is talked about among professional footballers: It’s a jumble of languages.
Is this a PR stunt? Yesterday the news came that football star Mesut Özil is launching a Twitch stream. The first suspicion was clear: this is purely a PR stunt.
But when you watched the stream, you heard a completely normal gamer who is with his friends playing Fortnite.
This is how the stream was: Last night Özil (M10_88) was in Fortnite as a squad with teammate Sead Kolasinac (SeoKol31) and two others.
The stream lasted about 2 hours. At its peak, over 30,000 viewers were watching. However, the team couldn’t win any of the 15 matches.
How good is Mesut Özil? As a Fortnite player, he is quite solid. On Fortnite Tracker, you can see that he primarily plays on PlayStation 4. He has completed nearly 5000 matches and won 608 of them – a K/D of 1.91 ranks him at 974,353. This makes him better than 93% of other Fortnite players.
Most of the time, Özil plays in a team; he has completed 4750 games there.
In the stream yesterday, it was evident that he plays well. He can build, collects kills, and is solid overall, although not flawless.
Babylonian Language Confusion
What is it like when he streams? It’s like with other groups of friends, but more international. Özil speaks a mix of German and English – a bit of Turkish and Spanish is also in there. He frequently uses gaming and slang terms.
At one point, he says: “Very, very good, Diego. Muy bien. Me gusta mucho.” Then Özil laughs. “I don’t know which language to speak. German, Turkish, English, Spanish, Arabic. Sead come on, I gave you the sniper. Sniper God. Yalla.”
Fortnite and football – does it match? Fortnite is incredibly popular among footballers – especially in England. Half of the Premier League and the English national team is said to be crazy about it. Özil currently plays for Arsenal London.
It’s rumored that German players got in trouble during the World Cup because they played too much PlayStation 4 at night. Allegedly, the DFB turned off the internet in the team hotel for them at least one night. After the stream, one can easily imagine that Özil was among the players who were said to have done this.
However, Fortnite was probably not responsible for the poor performance of the German team. The French footballers are also crazy about the game and they became world champions:
