The MMORPG classic Meridian 59 is making a comeback. The developers are planning a re-release of the old online game.
Meridian 59 is coming to Steam: The developers of the old MMORPG Meridian 59 have sent a sign of life via Twitter. According to the tweet, the online classic is set to be playable on Steam starting August 28.

What is Meridian 59?
Pioneer of MMORPGs: Meridian 59 is considered one of the first MMOs ever and the first MMORPG released in 3D graphics. It is therefore regarded as a pioneer for subsequent MMORPGs like World of Warcraft.
Meridian 59 was released in the USA in 1996 and in Germany in 1997. It was the first MMORPG fully available in German.
A long history: After its release by 3DO Company, Meridian 59 lasted until 2000 when the service had to be discontinued due to the operator’s insolvency. In 2002, MDO Entertainment took over the game and has continued to operate it since.
The old 3D graphics were updated in 2004 with the “Evolution” update. To this day, the MMORPG classic has a loyal fan base that still plans and organizes events.
In 2012, the source code of Meridian 59 was released as free software (Open Source) with some exceptions.
System requirements: In line with the upcoming release on Steam, the developers Archetype Interactive have re-released the current system requirements – which shouldn’t cause problems for anyone:
- Operating System: Windows 2000
- Processor: Pentium 2
- RAM: 256 MB RAM
- Graphics: any 3D card
- DirectX: version 9.0
- Storage: 350 MB of available storage space

Whether the developers will revamp or reboot the game before its release on Steam is still unclear. So far, there are no plans known for new or improved content.
