Now it is official: The race of Viera from Final Fantasy XII and Tactics Advance will soon be playable in Final Fantasy XIV. However, something very important was missing in the teaser video for the race.
Who are the Viera? In the games known as “Ivalice Alliance”, the Viera are one of the many races living in the magical world of Ivalice. They are primarily distinguished by their large rabbit ears and mostly live in harmony with nature, isolated from the rest of the world.

Only a few Viera leave their forests, such as the first of their representatives in FFXIV, Fran. Fran appeared at the end of the story of the 24-man raid “Return to Ivalice”.
In the teaser video, you can catch a glimpse of how the Viera will look in Final Fantasy XIV.
What is missing? A significant detail in the teaser video is that only female Viera are shown. So far, no new images or artworks of male Viera have been released.
The only two places where male rabbits have been mentioned are:
- By an NPC in the game, who tells players more about the history of the Viera in FFXIV. He says that men and women live strictly separated from each other.
- In a very old concept artwork from the time of the Heavensward expansion,

Why shouldn’t there be any men? In the original Ivalice games, the Viera were considered to be a purely female race. It was said that the men also lived deep in the forests, but so far, only women have been seen and, above all, playable.
At the press conference, the question about the male Viera was answered by Naoki Yoshida with a “…There is still the Fan Fest in Japan….”.

We will learn more in March at the next Fan Fest about why only the female Viera have been introduced so far.
