As part of the Grindfest, MeinMMO discussed the future of the genre. A significant part of this consists of Asian MMORPGs that could save the genre’s future. We explain which representatives are interesting and which have less chance in the talk.
Who is participating in the Gamestar Talk and what is it about? In line with the MeinMMO theme week Grindfest, host Felix Rick was invited to talk about Asian MMORPGs, their chances, but also their difficulties. Joining him are Managing Editor Sophia Weiß and Senior Editor Karsten Scholz from MeinMMO.
In the talk, the three first discuss why so many Asian MMORPGs are coming to the West and what challenges Western MMORPG development actually entails. Topics like high costs and the significant chance of becoming a flop play a crucial role.
According to MeinMMO’s experts, games from Asia have it somewhat easier. They can initially test themselves in the Asian market and work on their strengths and weaknesses before coming to the West. However, porting in the West has its own unique challenges.

The Grindfest is over
The MeinMMO theme week Grindfest is behind us, and over 30 articles have been published. From the first MMO to 2025 and beyond, we have summarized the history of the genre. We asked you which MMORPG will be the hit in the future, and the team from MeinMMO, GamePro, and GameStar has written 9 love letters to the genre.
Another highlight was the GameStar Talk with guest and WoW veteran George “Uncle Barlow” Zaal, in which nearly 2 hours of 60 years of MMORPG history were discussed, and all important milestones paired with nostalgic memories were experienced once again.
