The Grindfest is live and MeinMMO was a guest on GameStar Talk to discuss the history of MMORPGs. Joining us: WoW veteran “Uncle Barlow”. If you want to watch the lively chat, you are in the right place.
Who is participating in the Gamestar Talk and what is it about? In line with the currently ongoing themed week about the genre of MMORPGs, host Felix Rick invited to chat about the history of online role-playing games. Joining him are Managing Editor Sophia Weiß and Senior Editor Karsten Scholz from MeinMMO and WoW veteran George “Uncle Barlow” Zaal.
Many WoW fans are likely familiar with “Uncle Barlow” from his entertaining class blogs, which you can still listen to in full glory on YouTube. George is also a seasoned journalist from the gaming sector, who has worked for GIGA Games and GIGA Play among others.
The quartet takes nearly 2 hours to celebrate nearly 60 years of online worlds. They discuss the roots of MMORPGs, significant milestones of the genre, and of course, our nostalgic memories.

The Grindfest continues
As part of our themed week, more than a dozen articles have already been published. Included is a comprehensive special on the history of MMORPGs from the 1960s to 2025 in text form, which also goes into many games that unfortunately didn’t have time in the Talk.
Additionally, there were two jam-packed streaming evenings where not only the history of MMORPGs was a topic, but we also created a ranking of the 20 games that you voted as the best MMORPGs of all time last year . Oh, and there was a fun quiz with questions about the genre of online role-playing games and we highlighted a current trend from Asia.
