The second spring begins in autumn
For many fans, a long-held wish finally comes true: WildStar is switching from a subscription model to Free2Play, responding to the demands of many interested players. However, this step was also necessary because the game fell far short of expectations. After a fairly successful launch, the player count quickly dwindled, and a seemingly endless chain of negative reports caused discontent.
Promises were broken, new content was pushed further back, and inconsistencies in PvP remained untouched for many months. For many, the game was doomed at least after Stephan Frost left the team – he had been the figurehead of WildStar until then.
A year later, the game is now making a comeback and has been polished up considerably. Graphics issues are a thing of the past, the loot system is more logical, and the once elitist group content is opening up to a broader player base. And most importantly: The game is now free. Will you give WildStar a second chance?
Cortyn says: From my personal perspective, WildStar does many things right with the switch to become a more mass-appealing game. Better accessibility, clearer systems, and more rewards all around are surely beneficial for Nexus. I particularly commend that most items from the in-game shop can also be obtained without having to spend real money.
But are these points important to me? No, they are not. I liked WildStar in its basic features as it was at launch. I liked that crafting was time-consuming and the dungeons were incredibly difficult, even during the leveling phase. I will definitely take another look into Carbine’s universe – but I will not give the game a fair second chance.
