Online role-playing games should last as long as possible and are constantly updated and revised. But sometimes the technology behind them is too old and the games need to be completely re-released. But what would such remakes look like, and which games would you like to see a new version of?
As a developer, you can keep a game modern for a long time through clever updates, but eventually, the age shows, and a game starts to feel old. The graphics are outdated, the combat system is old-fashioned, and the gameplay no longer meets the latest standards. In such a case, a remake would be desirable.
For example, like with The Secret World, which was unnecessarily clunky in its original form. In the more accessible remake version Secret World Legends, the mystery MMO is therefore – at least for me – more fun.
What would classics like WoW or Ultima Online look like as remakes?
There are still some venerable games that are still played but are starting to look old. One such game would be World of Warcraft. The MMORPG classic from Blizzard has evolved massively, and especially the graphics have been renewed multiple times in recent updates.
But how long can that last? Can the developers keep the aging game fresh for more years? Or wouldn’t it be better if Blizzard completely renewed the game? And what would such a WoW 2.0 look like? Would it have a modern action combat system or would it still have the classic tab-targeting?
The same goes for other MMO classics like Ultima Online, Everquest, or even the discontinued Star Wars Galaxies? Wouldn’t it be cool to have a Star Wars sandbox game with the gameplay and graphics of Black Desert Online? Let us know in the comments your thoughts on potential remakes of well-known online role-playing games!
