Which control method do you prefer? Some players swear by the gamepad with its ergonomically placed buttons and analog sticks. However, other gamers prefer the good old mouse and keyboard with their many keys and functions. What type of player are you?
Yes, I admit it! I just cannot handle controllers! Whenever I try, I’m completely confused when it suddenly says “Press R1 for a heavy attack.” Every time, I have to carefully look at the gamepad and search for the corresponding button. Even when I know it’s those buttons at the top of the gamepad, I still don’t exactly know where the right button is and whether R1 is the upper or lower button.
This is probably due to my severe left/right weakness and is always super embarrassing at events like GamesCom.
At game presentations, you usually get stuck with some stupid controller and a nice PR person says, “Come on, play!” The Shame, the Shame …
Controllers are really practical!
“What a noob this Stöffel is! Controllers are totally awesome!” I hear many writing here. And yes, of course, gamepads are great! If you can handle them, they combine the most important functions of most games on a few, easily reachable buttons and sticks. OMG, these little sticks are also terrible, I can hardly manage with them!
But no matter, for many games – like For Honor, The Witcher or Warframe – gamepads are a great thing. This way, experienced players can play smoothly and intuitively and certainly have a great gaming experience. Why would anyone want to use something else to control?
Mouse and Keyboard, that’s all you need!
“Not true at all! Controllers are for console gamers! Real gamers play with mouse and keyboard,” some other readers might say here. That may be a bit harshly worded, but at least for me, controlling with mouse and keyboard is non-negotiable.
Nowhere else do I have all the keys and functions in sufficient quantity. And the precision of a mouse is still unmatched! No wonder console shooters sometimes have brutal aim assists, because otherwise, you wouldn’t hit a barn door.
Sure, a keyboard is primarily a work tool and not primarily designed for gaming. Special gaming keyboards do have their own functions, but if you don’t know what you’re doing, you constantly mistype and certainly end up as clueless as I am with the gamepad.
