The battle royale genre is currently THE gaming highlight that cannot be overlooked. Worldwide, teams are developing new battle royale modes for their games. However, not every player can relate to the mode. What hype would you prefer instead? Which game or genre should be in the spotlight, in your opinion?
Instead of bringing innovations, developers today seem to be chasing the battle royale hype. Currently, the hype is the battle royale genre, which is finding its way into more and more games, making it almost impossible to escape. The hype train rushes through all stops from Fortnite and PUBG.
Some of you, however, are not in agreement with the hype surrounding the shooter genre. You expressed this under the article about why Fortnite annoys me. Which genre do you think should be more in the spotlight? Which game or type of video games do you think receives way too little coverage?
Why does it always have to be a hype?
There have already been trend genres before battle royale. Previously, it was MOBAs that delighted players. Dota 2 and League of Legends are two representatives who were able to gather a following even after the MOBA hype ended. Through the streaming platform Twitch, Dota 2 and LoL attracted many viewers.
Then came virtual card games: a genre inspired by the real card game Magic: The Gathering. With Hearthstone, Blizzard also jumped on the trend, while Bethesda with The Elder Scrolls: Legends and CD Projekt with Gwent cooked their own broth.
Another hype emerged around the so-called team shooters. Besides the major forerunner Overwatch, other games have also tried their luck in this genre. While Paladins was able to establish itself, many other titles, such as Battleborn, Gigantic, or LawBreakers, failed.
