In October, various places around the world celebrate Halloween. Many online games have also become venues for celebrations featuring skulls, candy, and pumpkins. Sometimes a Headless Horseman flies by, which you must beat up. Do you enjoy Halloween events in video games – or could you do without them?
Many Germans likely became familiar with the Halloween celebration as we know it from America through television in their childhood. When families in movies and series carved pumpkin lanterns and set up spooky decorations in front of their houses, it was again time for “trick or treat.”
However, this “trend” hasn’t fully arrived in Germany yet. If someone rings my doorbell in October asking for candy, they look at empty space. Not everyone enjoys these festivities.
However, the Halloween craze is becoming more present in video games. When game developers plan events for their games, a spooky event for Halloween is rarely missing. And almost every player gets to see it. But is that a good thing?
World of Warcraft, Destiny, and Pokémon GO – Spookiness Everywhere
Various video games now invite you to their spooky celebrations and offer cool surprises and rewards:
- Pokémon GO hosted a special in-game event at Halloween 2016 where players earned more “candies”. The event was so well received by the fans that it sparked a further hype for the mobile app. An event has already been announced for 2017.
- In World of Warcraft, players have celebrated the “Hallowed Nights” in October for years, where buckets full of candy, cursed broomsticks, and battles with the Headless Horseman can be found.
- Destiny lured Guardians to the Festival of the Lost in recent years. Last year, like in WoW, there were also broomsticks with which you could zoom around the world. Whether such a Halloween event will return in Destiny 2 is still uncertain.
- Costumes and candy are also unpacked in Guild Wars 2 at the end of October. Players can explore what’s up with the mad King Thorn during the festival.
- Overwatch celebrates the “Overwatch Halloween Terror 2017” with spooky skins starting from October 10th. Last year, there were already Halloween-style skins and a special game mode where waves of zombies had to be defeated.
However, this is just a small selection of online games that celebrate the Halloween event.
Many games offer a special event in October that is then presented to everyone:
- Some players look forward to this Halloween fun every year. If there are cool items to grab or other nice loot, they gladly participate in such an event.
- Other players do not see the point of Halloween and are already annoyed by the many pumpkin lanterns along the roadside before the event.
