More and more MMOs are striving for feel-good features that are supposed to provide the player with a place where they can simply relax. After all, even the greatest hero cannot constantly save the world and occasionally wants to stretch their legs in the comfort of their own home to let their soul unwind a bit. In recent years, the number of games that came to market with a housing feature has increased (ArcheAge, WildStar), but other MMOs have even retrofitted such systems (SWTOR).
The customization options vary greatly, while in some worlds hardly any individualization is possible (Garrison in WoW), in other MMOs players can unleash their creativity (WildStar). Some swear by open-world houses, where everyone can visit each other, while others love instanced apartments where they are safe from unwanted disturbances. We want to know from you: Which MMO offers the best housing and why?
Cortyn says: My opinion on the topic of housing is probably well known, but just for you, I will gladly elaborate once more. While I quite like the housing in Star Wars: The Old Republic because you can choose from several planets, the options for building customization are rather limited. No, I have really only been truly happy with the housing in WildStar. The seemingly endless possibilities for design are – at least for me – unmatched so far.
However, I am also much happier with instanced housing, as unwanted role-playing disturbances can be kept at bay more easily, and there are never any “space issues” when all lots are already occupied. At the same time, I don’t see a logical problem with the instanced housing in WildStar, as the different islands are anyway distributed across all of Nexus in the storyline and do not stand in exactly the same place for all players, like the Garrison in WoW. Also, when it comes to the pure time investment that I can put into my Aurin’s house, other games fall short by a long shot. Certainly half of my WildStar playtime (and that is a lot) goes solely into housing.
