After PUBG and Fortnite, more and more games want to hop on the Battle Royale bandwagon. What do you think about that?
Anyone who has been following news about video games in recent months has noticed a recurring topic: the Battle Royale genre.
Bluehole’s PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds showed how to be incredibly successful with it. Shortly after, Fortnite from Epic Games followed this trend and attracted even more attention with its free-to-play version. Now, more and more games want a piece of this pie. Does that annoy you? Or do you think it’s cool?
GTA 5 and soon other games with BR mode?
The high player numbers clearly show that the Battle Royale genre seems to fill a gap. Those who want to play a realistic-looking BR shooter go for PUBG. Comic style and free-to-play model are available in Fortnite. But those are not the only options for Battle Royale.
For example, Rockstar Games cautiously ventured in and activated a BR mode within GTA 5. The Motor Wars mode was unlocked in August 2017 and was well-received in the community.
The principle is always similar: as many players as possible dive into the map at the start of a match, search for equipment and weapons, and try to be the last surviving player. Because there can only be one winner.
After PC and console games, mobile variants of the BR mode are now also following. Fortnite and PUBG are now getting started with that.
Now Activision Blizzard, the company behind games like the upcoming Call of Duty Black Ops 4 or Destiny 2, says they are aware of the high profit from Battle Royale titles. They also reminded that they can quickly implement good ideas from others.
Is a BR mode for Call of Duty or other Activision Blizzard games maybe being hinted at? And if so: does the community even want that?
There can never be enough Battle Royale, right?
In the community, two extremes are often noticeable: players who wish for a Battle Royale mode for game X and players who are already fed up with the topic.
For Ubisoft’s tactical shooter Ghost Recon Wildlands, a BR mode has already been frequently suggested by the community. After all, Ubisoft is at the forefront in terms of handling weapons in that game.
Others say: Thanks, with Fortnite and PUBG (and other alternatives), we are already well-served. We want our favorite game to focus fully on what it actually is about. A Battle Royale mode is not necessary.
