SWTOR has a great story – but is the game still an MMO? Cortyn thinks: Not for everyone.
Wishing you a nice Wednesday! Glad that you found the time to check this out between your Overwatch matches, world quests, and Destiny dawn strikes (or whatever that stuff is called). Today we are talking a bit about an MMO that has actually become a solo game.
Past Days in SWTOR
After my 4th alt in World of Warcraft has now reached the maximum level, I had a conversation with a good friend last week about whether we should take another look at Star Wars: The Old Republic. Especially after the new, bombastic trailer, he was pretty hyped.
We reminisced about the past and our Sith career in SWTOR and then discussed how the game has changed over the years.
In the beginning, it was pretty cool: You completed the “planet quests” together, and during dialogues, it was decided who could provide an answer in turn. Although you couldn’t make decisions in the personal class story, you could watch others in their story – that was exciting and cool.
When we started “Knights of the Fallen Empire” almost a year ago, we actually wanted to play together – but that didn’t work. All the storyline (except for one or two planetary areas) was made for solo players and basically everything was instanced. It ended up being that we were hanging out on Skype while playing through the chapters in parallel and then telling each other about our decisions (and the differences in the impacts). Although that was still cool, it didn’t really have much to do with “playing together” anymore. SWTOR had – at least for us – simply completely lost the MMO aspect.
SWTOR – Better off if it is not an MMO
In our opinion, SWTOR has definitely become a better game with the last expansion – but it’s no longer an MMORPG. All group activities are optional and some are so well “hidden” that they don’t even stand out during normal play. For us, SWTOR has become nothing more than a solid single-player RPG with integrated chat. Don’t get me wrong: We had an enormous amount of fun in SWTOR. But just not together, rather each on their own.
That doesn’t seem to change much with “Knights of the Eternal Throne” either, as 9 chapters will be told here again, which will likely be pure solo experiences. The story will surely be great, but more than discussing it together is probably all the game will be able to offer us anymore.
Maybe I just see things wrong. How do you perceive SWTOR at the moment? Do you play it, like me, primarily for the solo content? Or do you enjoy the group tasks?
