The E3 makes everyone happy. Only one demon is somehow not satisfied with the “new” consoles.
The world needs more Xboxes… actually not
The big press conferences of E3 have been wrapped up and alongside many interesting (Zelda! Final Fantasy! Detroit: Become Human!) and less exciting announcements (everything else!) for all kinds of platforms, there was also some fresh wind from the hardware sector. Although “fresh wind” might be an exaggeration, since it’s not really new.
I am talking about the two new Xbox consoles that are set to release over the course of this year and next. The Xbox One Slim is not just a thinner variant of the console, but also a technological advancement, as it now supports 4K resolution – at least for movies. This also includes “movie sequences” in some games.
The three-class society of Xbox
So what is the expected outcome? There are three different quality levels of the gaming experience on Xbox. On the “old” One with familiar graphics, on the “new” Slim with improved movie sequences, or on the Scorpio, where everything looks nicer.
Yes, I’m old-fashioned again. But wasn’t the advantage of a console that you didn’t have to constantly worry about hardware upgrades? Wasn’t this consistency also a marketing point that differentiated consoles from PCs?
I would even go further and claim: Due to the technical limitations that an older console inherently brought over the years, developers had to come up with tricks and techniques to squeeze a bit more performance out of the box despite the old hardware. Those who are too young to remember should compare Final Fantasy VII and Final Fantasy IX – both games ran on the PlayStation 1, but the graphics were worlds apart.
How do you see this whole thing? Does this “console craze” bother you or are you actually looking forward to the “new old” consoles? Will you buy the Slim or wait directly for the Scorpio?
P.S: I don’t think the PS4K is any better either…
