Cortyn is excited about Sombra in Overwatch. At least until everyone wanted to play her in competitive mode.
I wish you all a lovely Wednesday (once again). A new patch in my favorite shooter should indeed be a reason for joy, right? Well, almost. Why that is not quite the case in Overwatch, I will gladly explain again.
Yesterday, the latest hero for Overwatch finally came within reach, as Sombra left the PTR and has finally hacked herself onto the live servers (actually patched, but that doesn’t sound as cool). Together with the new game modes, the patch is relatively polished and has a lot to offer. If only not everyone would play Sombra.
And now the (absolutely unexpected!) realization: Most players have not yet figured out how to play Sombra effectively. I myself am not excluded from that. But last night, I experienced in 8 out of 11 games that a player desperately wanted to play Sombra, no matter how many times he was shot down and regardless of how useless the character was in a situation. The problem: That was in competitive game mode.
The justification of these players is absurd yet understandable: In “Quick Play,” currently everyone wants to play Sombra, resulting in the player with the quickest click getting this character. In competitive game mode, most try to play “seriously” to achieve a good ranking, meaning: they do not choose Sombra because they are not yet experienced with her. So what do the frustrated “Quick Play” people do, who cannot get Sombra there? Right, they play Ranked.
After the match, I even spoke with one of these players and asked why he wouldn’t play the new “No Limits” mode. The answer: Everyone would play Sombra there, and it would be nothing special for the team anymore.
Sometimes people are just difficult. It’s probably best if I let Overwatch rest for a few days until the Sombra hype has died down.
At least: Often enough, the opposing team also had a Sombra fanatic, so both sides had the handicap.
