Along with fun and horror, Cortyn experiences mainly one thing in the horror game Dead by Daylight: frustration to the limit.
Happy Wednesday everyone! After I have given too much attention to my favorite WoW in the last few weeks, I am now complaining on a different front. So what else is left but to dedicate a few lines to my new “underdog” Dead by Daylight, which has carried me through many a night?
Don’t know Dead by Daylight yet? Here we briefly introduce the game. Because while I have gotten better at the game over the past weeks, I have also noticed more and more bugs and annoyances that have been in the game for far too long.
Survivors just run in circles endlessly
The most annoying thing in the game is that there are still “Infinites.” On some maps, there are situations where survivors are simply unreachable. To explain it roughly: the killer is usually faster than a survivor. For a survivor to escape, he must either shake off the killer or buy time by jumping through windows. The killer can only pass blockades significantly slower.
Now, there are some situations where a survivor can simply “endlessly” toy with the killer (hence “Infinite”), while the rest repairs generators until the killer frustratedly stops the chase. Especially the players of the first hour, often recognizable by their prestige clothing, take advantage of such spots.
Equally frustrating is the matchmaking. Although I have surely improved in the last few weeks and now consider myself a “solid” killer with all characters, the matchmaking is a joke. Not only is it common to be mixed with 4 survivors at rank 1 while at rank 15, but also earning rank points is too easy. As a killer, I am currently at rank 3 – which is significantly better than I actually am. I am not as good as the game portrays me.
This is mainly because as a killer, you have to achieve very little not to fall in rank. Here a survivor hit, there a player successfully sacrificed – and you don’t drop, even if I was led by the nose 90% of the time. Currently, it is even possible for all players (survivors and killers) to leave a match so that they all rank up – that’s just ridiculous.
Survivors mock the killer
One last point is the “elite” players who hang out in voice chat as a group of four (for which the game, according to developer statements, is simply not designed) and are all armed with a flashlight and the Saboteur perk. It takes what feels like 20 seconds before there are four “Pling” sounds in a match and all hooks are destroyed, meaning I can no longer sacrifice the survivors in the usual way (the basement with the “indestructible” hooks is too far away).
But instead of ending it quickly and winning, the survivors mock me. As soon as I catch one of them and want to pick him up (silly of me, because where am I going to take him?), 3 people stand in front of me with their flashlights and blind me repeatedly. Over and over again. After that, they run in circles around me, teabagging like crazy and spamming emotes – should things get serious, they sprint away using the perk “Sprint Burst.”
In such moments, I don’t feel like the powerful killer that survivors should fear. I am no threat, but merely “points on two legs” that can be milked. I feel like the bullied outsider in a school playground shoving circle, who in desperation can only lash out in anger – or, in my case, simply escape the nightmare with Alt+F4 and hope to sink low enough in the ranking to play against reasonable people.
Sure, as the developers said, they are currently working on a massive update of the engine, which takes a lot of time. But when the base game has been suffering from bugs for over 2 months that ruin almost every match for the “better” players, and they also announce a console port… I have to wonder where the priorities of the developers really lie. As sympathetic as they are to me, I cannot understand it.
I really hope that the upcoming patch addresses all these issues – because the game itself is exciting and entertaining. But the bugs and annoyances lead to so much frustration that I currently log in less and less often.
I have also vented about Michael Myers in Dead by Daylight – he is also bad.
