Mechwarrior 5 is in the works. This is supposed to be a singleplayer game from the studio behind Mechwarrior Online.
Mech fans, especially well represented in German, have reason to rejoice. At “Piranha”, the studio behind “Mechwarrior Online”, they are developing Mechwarrior 5. A “proper” Mechwarrior game, not online, not made by fans, but a singleplayer game.
It is said that in Mechwarrior 5: Mercenary you will take on the role of a young soldier and embark on a career as a mercenary. You will accept missions from the various factions, get into the Mech, and experience first-person PvE Mech battles.

Mechwarrior 5 is said to start in the year 3015 and the story is supposed to extend into the year 3049. The typical features of the series are firmly planned: Opponent Mechs can be shot at point by point, dismantled, and salvaged. It is even supposed to be possible to, for example, shoot off just one arm and take the weapon that was attached there after the battle.
When it comes to the actual gameplay, the Mech battles, the creators do not want to reinvent the wheel – they are building on “Mechwarrior Online”. However, for the surrounding aspects, Mechwarrior 5 aims to add depth, focusing more on the “management” of a mercenary career, as mentioned in a longer interview with PcGamer.
The game is set to be released in 2018. A “separate team” at Piranha is working on the title.
After 16 years, there is a new Mechwarrior
The name “Battletech” is inseparably linked with Jordan Weisman. He founded FASA in the early 80s. That is the company that was closely involved with “Battletech”. There were then miniatures, a tabletop game, novels, a real world, and finally also video games. FASA also created Shadowrun, another sci-fi universe with cult potential.
To cut a long story short: In the 2000s, everything fell apart. Microsoft bought the “video game division” of FASA but later shut down the studio.

Piranha Games, a Canadian studio, then bought the Mechwarrior license from Microsoft through some twists and turns after years of doing nothing with the franchise and developed “Mechwarrior Online”, an MMO that is quite niche but finds favor among the fans.
Now, therefore, Mechwarrior 5. Fans have had to wait a long time for such an announcement: Mechwarrior 4 was released in 2000. Since then, Mech fans either have to turn to “Mechwarrior Online” or they have to settle for a surrogate like “Titanfall 2.”
