The legendary multiplayer mode from Mass Effect 3 could return. There are rumors – from both BioWare and other sources.
There are plenty of rumors currently swirling around Mass Effect. After all, the Legendary Edition has been released for some time now, and many veterans and newcomers are currently navigating the story of Commander Shepard and the Reapers. Although the Legendary Edition includes all DLCs, it omits the highly popular multiplayer mode at the time. New rumors have surfaced: BioWare and EA may announce the multiplayer mode in a few weeks.
What kind of multiplayer is this? The cooperative multiplayer was part of Mass Effect 3 and essentially offered action without pause. A team of 4 players had to fight off increasingly stronger waves of various enemies from the “Mass Effect” universe. For example, the Geth, Cerberus, or the Reaper forces.
At the easier difficulty levels, it resembles an endless massacre without requiring much strategy. A delight that doesn’t last long.
However, on the higher difficulty levels, this changes rapidly. Here, it was essential to have a well-coordinated team with complementary abilities. Stealth characters could quickly sneak up on fallen teammates and revive them, while biotic-oriented Asari set up shields or technicians protected flanking routes with their drones.
Besides the sheer joy of winning, collecting weapons and characters, there was another effect in Mass Effect 3: The “galactic readiness” for the final battle in single player increased. This is not necessary in the Legendary Edition, where readiness is calculated differently, without the multiplayer.
What are these rumors? Back then, at the end of 2020, the multiplayer mode was clearly ruled out. This is no longer the case. Project Director Mac Walters stated in an interview with Cnet magazine that the return of the multiplayer depends on player feedback and how well the Legendary Edition is received overall.
I would never say no to that. We want to see how players embrace the Legendary Edition and how high the demand for multiplayer is. Then we will consider whether we can allocate the resources and time to release [the multiplayer] in the quality that we and the fans want.
It should now be clear: The Legendary Edition has been very well received. On Steam, it has been sitting at the top of the sales charts for several days, and the general sentiment is largely positive. Our first impression was a clear recommendation as well.
Multiplayer announcement in June? The latest rumor claims that EA plans to add the multiplayer for Mass Effect: Legendary Edition, with an announcement at EA Play in July.
This is at least what Shpeshal_Nick claims on Twitter. He has been known in the past to be well-informed and has provided reliable predictions and announcements based on insider information.
This suggests that it might be possible for us to hear about the multiplayer in July and – perhaps – be able to experience it in a few weeks or months afterward. After all, only a little would have to be redone from the multiplayer since it could essentially be taken over 1:1 from the original version of Mass Effect 3.
A few improvements would certainly still be nice.
We need this mode
The appeal of the multiplayer mode from Mass Effect 3 is hard to describe. Essentially, it’s a nearly endless game where enemy troops must be repelled to earn money, which can then be invested in weapon crates and character upgrades. Endlessly repetitive – and yet extremely addictive.
I still remember well the time when I played multiplayer with my friends for 3-4 hours every day for months. Even though there is essentially no story content, we created our own little stories. There was little that got my adrenaline pumping as much as panicking while fleeing from a marauding Brute while a Banshee appeared from the side to lift me up and gently blow me out of life.
I need this multiplayer again. And ideally with new players who are currently experiencing it through the Legendary Edition.

Wouldn’t that be a pure loss-making endeavor? No, not necessarily. The original multiplayer mode already offered the option to spend real money. The weapon crates with upgrades and new characters could also be purchased back then with a premium currency. However, this was not necessary, and the prices for the crates were well-balanced with in-game currency, allowing you to afford one or two after nearly every match.
Additionally, the multiplayer mode essentially exists “finished” in the original Mass Effect 3. Much of it would just need to be copied and adjusted for EA’s infrastructure. Then the fun could begin anew.
Multiplayer is like Anthem, just better
I was a little disappointed when the Legendary Edition of Mass Effect was released without multiplayer. Because although the mode was ultimately more of a supplement to Mass Effect 3, I had a lot of fun with my team back then.
The biggest advantage here was the character design. Finally, you could also play as one of the other species from the Mass Effect universe. Each of the different classes felt distinct. In retrospect, Anthem borrowed a lot from this in aspects like power combos; the power fantasy through the abilities of the classes reminds me a bit of Outriders.
For example, there was the Krogan. You could either play him as an offensive tank, smashing everything with shotguns and headbutts, or you could choose the biotic vanguard, who could push his way through using biotic powers and teleport around the map. The standout character was the Volus, the biotic god.
I would be on board! While I would prefer fewer random factors when unlocking equipment, I wouldn’t complain about the pure original version either.

What memories do you have of the Mass Effect multiplayer? Have you never played it and would you like to shoot a bit side by side with Asari, Volus, and Krogan friends?
