On Wednesday evening, “Marvel’s Avengers” was presented in more detail. What does the superhero game offer for multiplayer fans around the most powerful heroes on Earth?
This was shown: During the livestream, the story and the new enemy MODOK were introduced. New gameplay was also presented, showing how Thor fights through an early story mission. Additionally, a new cooperative trailer was released.
The developers addressed both the single-player aspects and the multiplayer. It was about time – after all, it is one of the most interesting multiplayer games of 2020.
Multiplayer: Avengers rely on teamwork
This is how the multiplayer works: In Marvel’s Avengers, there will be dedicated multiplayer missions called “War Zones.” These are missions for up to four players – which can also be played together with AI.
The missions follow the story. You start them from the Helicarrier, which takes on the role of an in-game hub. The missions are distributed by various characters from the Marvel Universe. This way, you can work for different factions and take on missions for Nick Fury.
However, there won’t be raid-like missions, as colleagues from GameStar found out in an interview with Crystal Dynamics. However, the highest difficulty level in the War Zones is said to be quite challenging.
Speaking of different characters: Only one Avenger is allowed per Warzone, you cannot send Hulk four times into battle. The missions take place in open areas and open terrain.
Work as a team: All heroes have their own attacks and abilities that you can improve using a skill tree. They also have different skins from the long history of Marvel, which you can unlock but also purchase.
The abilities of the heroes are divided into:
- Assault
- Ultimate
- Support
Assaults are powerful, quickly charged attacks. Ultimates are the strongest abilities of the heroes, and support abilities can be used to assist other heroes. For example, Thor creates an electric storm that can grant your friends temporary invulnerability.
Depending on which abilities and equipment you use, you can form different, strong teams. Due to the customizability, your Iron Man will likely play differently than yours friends’. This way, you have the opportunity to build completely unique heroes.
Depending on your teams, you can also trigger powerful team finishers between the heroes that can take down opponents in a short time. Here you can figure out the best combinations with your friends.
New heroes, regions, and stories will be added throughout the game – at no additional cost.
Initial Reactions: Could Become a Superhero Destiny
This is how fans react: The first reactions to the presented multiplayer are quite varied. Especially noticeable: Many players draw parallels to games like Destiny.
For example, Twitter user Marco Cocomello commented: “Marvel’s Avengers looks like the superhero Destiny game I always wanted” (via Twitter).
User “Neo Aoshi” also viewed it positively (via Twitter): “I have to say the game looks significantly better than last time,” referring to an initial presentation that faced mixed reactions: “What will matter is how the game feels. Combining a Destiny feel with Brawler-esque gameplay is an interesting concept.”
However, players mean less the purely combat aspect, when watching the stream. Because at those points, Anthem was also mentioned more frequently. A commenting user clarified on Facebook in our post: “Take a closer look at the videos. This does not refer to the combat system. Certain displays in the menus or the health bars of the opponents resemble Destiny quite a bit. It seems like they want to create a Destiny-like game in the Marvel universe.”
Overall, the gameplay was also very well shown in a solo mission for Thor:
The presentation definitely caused quite a stir. By the way: If you want to play Avengers on PS4, and later get a PS5, you can easily upgrade the superhero game to the next generation.
