The action-adventure Marvel’s Avengers is about to start its first beta tests. We at MeinMMO will tell you 5 reasons why the game might also be interesting for multiplayer fans.
In Marvel’s Avengers, you take on the role of a hero from the Marvel universe and complete action-packed missions. You’ll experience both a single player mode with story missions and many coop tasks that you should solve together with other players.
The game emphasizes multiplayer and could even become an interesting “Games as a Service” title.
In August, various beta events for the action-adventure will take place, but we have already gathered all the known information and present you the most important features.
1. A multiplayer in the Marvel universe
One of the most interesting aspects of Marvel’s Avengers is the universe and the story around it. Many characters in the game are well-known from comics, movies, and television. However, there are also new, unused faces.
The game places great importance on spectacular cutscenes and an impressive atmosphere. Additionally, the story has an interesting approach.
What is the story about? The story of the game begins on A-Day, a day when the Avengers are celebrated. However, during the ceremony, Taskmaster leads a terrorist attack on the city.
This attack destroys the Avengers’ helicarrier, resulting in an explosion, the destruction of a large part of the city, and the death of Captain America. The Avengers are blamed for the chaos and subsequently disband.
5 years later, a new organization – Advanced Idea Mechanics or AIM – has taken control and declares all people with special abilities to be illegal.
A young Inhuman named Kamala Khan, who has special abilities herself, discovers that AIM was involved in the events of A-Day and now attempts to reunite the Avengers to stand against the organization.
2. Providing variety with 5 individual characters
In Marvel’s Avengers, you have the choice of 5 different playable characters:
- Iron Man
- Hulk
- Thor
- Black Widow
- Ms. Marvel
In the future, more heroes like Ant-Man will be added for free.
Each of them will have unique skills and specialties that will lead to various mechanics. Additionally, each character will receive a skill tree, different ultimate attacks, and can be enhanced with equipment. You earn these through missions.
How does it look in multiplayer? In multiplayer, each of these characters can only be taken once; however, one should be able to notice differences in playstyle even with the same character through adapted equipment and the skill trees.
If you want to play only with friends, you can skip the story and the single player and jump into multiplayer with your character.
3. Action-packed gameplay
As befits an action-adventure, combat plays an important role. The fights are supposed to be very dynamic and full of effects. All abilities have a “superhuman” impact, as our colleagues from GamePro describe in their preview .

What skills are available? Each character is supposed to be able to use, in addition to a normal attack, 3 active abilities and a super ability. Some abilities focus more on ground combat, while others emphasize aerial combat.
4. Different mission types for variety
In an interview, developer Phil Therien revealed to MeinMMO some details about the content in multiplayer. The game is supposed to function like a “living organism”. By completing missions, you unlock new missions, creating a chain reaction.
The missions are not meant to be static, but are supposed to rotate in and out over time. However, there should always be a certain base amount of tasks available.
What do the tasks look like? Missions on the so-called War Table look like this:
- Story: You can help rebuild SHIELD after the events of A-Day. Alternatively, you can play missions that tell how the heroes spent the years after A-Day.
- Bosses: You can face known and lesser-known villains from the Marvel universe.
- Secrets: You can complete a mission where you find a secret SHIELD hideout that gives you coordinates for a mysterious stash. And this stash is then its own mission that gives you further special rewards and loot.
- Collecting and grinding: You can gather rare resources and upgrade your helicarrier or simply farm EXP and gear for your heroes.
5. AI as support when not enough friends are online
Marvel’s Avengers employs a coop mode designed for up to 4 players. This is good for fans of multiplayer, who should enjoy it in small groups.
However, even if not enough friends are online at the same time or you don’t want to team up with others, there is an alternative.
You can equip and level up your character as well as the other members of the Avengers. This AI will accompany you into battles, reminiscent of the hero system from Guild Wars 1.
The only exciting release until October?
Marvel’s Avengers will be released on September 4th and that is an interesting time. The title was originally scheduled for May 2020 but was then postponed.
Since New World will only be released in 2021 and other titles are waiting to release until the launch of the new console, there is a slight lull in new games during August and September.
